Second Hand Clothing ROCKS! Here's Why...

When my little girl was 4-months-old, a friend told me about the Just Between Friends consignment sale in our town.  She raved about how there were the best deals there and how cute the clothes were and on and on.  I decided to check it out and now know that second hand clothing is the best!

The Just Between Friends sale is held in the spring and fall here in our town.  This last sale was my third shopping trip. Find out my shopping tips for the sale here.

Including tax on my most recent trip I bought 27 items for just under $60.00.  That is just over $2.00 an item.  Some consignors sell their clothing in sets and this can work out to a better deal than if they were sold individually.

Here are a few of my purchases that were sold in sets.

This first set is a pink butterfly outfit complete with a tshirt, thermal shirt and jeans.

I love the pink butterflies on the back pockets.  So cute!

The pink butterfly outfit is by Faded Glory and the jeans have an Arizona label.  The set was sold for $7.00 and was my most expensive purchase.  But in reality each item was only $2.33, only a little higher than my average purchase price.  And the outfit looks new!

In this next picture the first three items were part a set.  The flower pants were sold individually.

The tshirts are by Garanimals and the skort is by Gumballs.  The set was $5.50, $1.84 a piece.  The flower pants are by Circo and were $2.00.

In the picture above, the flower shorts were sold in a set.  They are by Children's Place and were $4.00 for the set.  The yellow Grandma shirt was sold individually for $2.00 and is by Tender Kisses.

The next three sets are pajamas, which I've noticed are typically sold in sets.

The purple pajamas are by Carter's and were $4.00 for the set.

The pink pajamas are a set of 3 pieces, also by Carter's, for $4.50.  They are one of the most used looking pieces I bought, but this pajama material looks used after just a few washes anyway, so it didn't bother me.

The pink elephant pajamas are by Carter's (they make such cute pajamas!) and were $3.00.  They look new but have a little hole in the fabric from an ill placed tacket.
Tips for consignors from a consumer.  When tacketing your tags to clothing, enter the tacket ( the little plastic tag that holds price tags to clothes) through a seam or a label on the clothing.  When tacketed through the garment it creates a hole in the clothing.  Those holes bum me out!
Most of the clothing purchases I make are to fill in Peanut's closet with items to replace ones she has outgrown.
This shopping trip I was looking for shorts and tank tops since summer is coming and she only had a few warm weather tops that still fit.
Peanut is only 18-months-old but can wear anywhere from 18 month sizes (some pants and shorts) up to 4T (shirts).  She's a tall little girl! Can anyone else relate?

Above are three tank tops I found for Peanut.  The white striped one is by Old Navy and was $1.00. I love how it looks like a retro seventies style! The orange butterfly tank is by Children's Place and was $2.00.  The purple ruffle tank is by Jumping Beans and was $2.50.

The yellow GAP shirt was $1.50 and the striped Gymboree shorts were $2.00.  I love the colors in the shorts, they are probably my favorite combination of colors.  How could I not get them?

This cute and retro looking Snoopy shirt is by Peanuts and was $1.50.  It is so soft, I want one in my size!

This patriotic white tshirt is by OshKosh and was $2.50.  Perfect for Independence Day, haha!

Peanut needed another pair of light leggings so I picked up this polka dotted pair by Circo for $2.00.  They look a little worn, but also looked really comfortable.

Some of the items I buy are with the future in mind.  I have a few 4T and size 5 items in her closet already.  I figure it doesn't hurt to plan ahead!

My husband spotted this pink and white Champion exercise outfit.  It is so cute!  And only $3.00.  It won't fit her for awhile, but I will be trying it on her occasionally, anxious for when it does fit.  I'll need to find her a sweatband and some leg warmers in the meantime.  :)

And these classic Levis were also a pair I couldn't pass up.  At $4.00 they are the most expensive individual piece I bought.  But check out the cute back pockets!

If those back pockets weren't so darn cute, I would have left them on the rack.  Maybe if I roll up the pants a million times she can wear them early!

And there you have it.  Why second hand clothing rocks!  Especially at the Just Between Friends consignment sale.  I love it!

I like how if Peanut gets a stain on her clothes or outgrows something faster than I was anticipating that I'm not out a bunch of money.

Another bonus, you get to keep the hangers.  I'm not sure if that matters to anyone else, but I love it when I get to keep the hanger when I buy new clothes.  Especially for pants.  I never have enough pants hangers!

Do you have any favorite places to get good deals on clothes for your kids?  I picked up a handful of dresses at a neighbors garage sale for Peanut for $.50 a piece and a nice pair of shoes for $1.00.  Does anyone garage sale shop for kids clothes?  I'm thinking of maybe trying some more garage sales this summer.

  1. They keep the hangers here but you can find some great deals on cool clothes at the Goodwill. I think it's a great bonus for the kids as they do make messes and keep growing and growing and growing :)

  10. I think second hand rocks too. In Asia though, it's not very popular as it is associated with being poor, and people here look down on the poor even though the poor may have a rich heart. Anyway, love your blog!!
